Abstract
The case of environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources is one of the main problems of the 21st century. The depletion of natural resources is of great concern for the productive potential of countries in the future. A large portion of research economists has turned their research interest into the study of those factors that can drive economies to grow as well as to their contribution at environmental degradation. Kuznets’s theory argues that there is a correlation between economic expansion and people’s income. Moreover Kuznets theory tells us that economic growth resolves the problem of income inequality at some point. The purpose of this research proposal for a doctoral dissertation is to investigate the implementation of the Kuznets environmental curve theory by correlating environmental degradation with other economic indicators, apart from per capita GDP, such as unemployment or part-time work. At the same time, ways of decoupling energy use from economic growth and environmental degradation will be explored. The research will be carried out with data from existing databases and their analysis will be done using appropriate dataset panel data or time series data).
