Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to examine in detail the growing area of Internet-of-Things (IoT), where various devices and sensors are interconnected, and the applications that the machine learning algorithms could have in making decisions. In addition, reference is made to the conversion of data exchanged between different devices – sensors, to Semantic Web ontologies. This research has three main parts:

· Sensor Networks

· Machine Learning Algorithms

· Semantic web

Sensor networks represent a sector that is continuously being developed, requiring new techniques and protocols for successful communication. The analysis and study of existing protocols is a major issue for the community of the Internet of Things. This is the first objective of this thesis: finding the most efficient architectures of Sensor Networks interfaces. Communication models and the design of the implementation of these entities will be considered in light of their best performance.

The second challenge concerns the adequate analysis of data collected by sensors and decision support. For data analysis and decision making, machine learning algorithms will be used.

The third area of research is the conversion of data collected by sensors and the results of their processing into semantic web ontologies aiming for the published information to contain meta-data that will be “understood” by machines that will be able to edit and combine them with other data online.

Subject of study

This thesis examines and analyzes all relevant communication technologies, different platforms, operating support systems and various programming environments which lie in the environment of Sensor Networks. Various machine learning algorithms for classification and data processing, decision making and predicting outcomes will also be considered. Finally, the semantic web technologies for data representation will be studied.
